| | hopeful | ] | Let me start this off by saying that I am not a huge fan of cats. As a matter of fact I am allergic to them. But I am also a big softy when it comes to any animal that is suffering in any way.
So today at work, while sitting there staring out the big bay door, a small kitten just wanders right on in and proceeds to hide in the corner. Being curious and all, a co-worker and I head over to see what is up. Whether or not it is one of the many strays that seem to wander around the outside of the factory or what. But upon seeing the kitten we notice its tail is "mangled" and it looks to be no more than 6 to 8 weeks old. Being concerned for its welfare we decide to catch it and get it some much needed medical attention. But it does not like the idea of being caught, and runs away from our attempts.
This is the part where it gets tricky. It runs under a forklift and proceeds to climb up into the compartment where most of the vital parts are kept. Now there are 3 of us involved with the attempted rescue of said kitten. We then begin to dismantle as much of the outside of the fork lift as we can. And as expected the brings zero results. This is one damn tricky cat. I then get on the phone to call my supervisor to bring an even bigger fork lift there so that we may lift up the smaller one to reach the part where the little bugger is hiding. And another supervisor shows up with some very thick welding gloves, that we then used for the kitten wrangling.
By now we have drawn a crowd of curious onlookers. And I was then informed that no such thing had ever happened in the history of said factory. I do like being a trend setter. Finally, after 5 people get involved, a some-what questionable safety hazard(three people with a several thousand pound fork lift over their heads), and 45 minutes of valuable work time have passed, we manage to "coax" said kitten into a box prepared for it.
A quick phone call to my girlfriend brings her racing into the parking lot to help out. She takes the kitten home to bathe it, while I frantically try to make a vet appointment for the next day. Upon further inspection of the kitten several other maladies were noticed. It most definitely has a bad case of worms, and a rather large cut on its left hind leg that may or may not be infected. She is understandably upset by this being that she is a cat person.
With fingers crossed I shall take said animal to the vet in the morning. And hope the he can help the poor little thing get over its ailments. Then comes the tricky part, finding it a home. As I said, I am allergic to cats. And never realized how hard it was to give one of the damn things away. But there is hope. Through a dedicated group of friends, who are actively seeking out a suitable home for this kitten, I have had some definite maybes. Eh, better than nothing. Wish me luck, and hopefully I will have better things to report tomorrow. |
